As teachers, we are crazy busy. Some days we run around so much we can barely get a sip of coffee in (horrors!). I once worked in a private kindergarten where I spent 9 hours a day with my students with an hour break for lunch. There were no specials, no rest time, but most of all, there was no lesson planning time. Curriculum? Learning standards? Lesson plan guides? Non-existent. I had to develop everything! I would spend 5 to 6 hours on a Saturday night preparing for the next week and not get paid because it was an hourly job. (Why did I ever take this crazy job?)
That’s when I learned the best lesson planning trick out there:
Have several GO-TO curriculum packets that will provide you with days, weeks, or even months of lessons.
I developed my ABC Practice Pages for just this purpose.
At the beginning of the school year, I generally teach 2 letters a week – 2 days devoted to one letter (2 letters x 2 days=4 days) plus one day for review of both letters.
That’s 26 phonics lessons!
Each letter has its own page chock-full of handwriting practice, letter and sound recognition, as well as letter vocabulary activities. Spread out this way, ABC Practice pages will take you right through until Christmas. The kids enjoy them immensely. I never hear an “Awww!” or “Not again!”. They like the predictability of it and stay engaged throughout the lessons.
