A Bugs Lesson Plan with Science, Literacy and Math activities! Students will love learning about bugs as they read, write, sort, subitize, and report on these creepy, crawly creatures. Read on to get some awesome ideas for your Bugs and Insects unit!
Can I be frank? I do not like to teach about Bugs & Insects. Anything creepy or crawly grosses me out. And for a long time I would dread the time when our Bugs & Insects theme would come around. But once I added a little cuteness (all right, a lot), I began to look forward to this time of year. I hope with the activities below you too will find it fun to teach about these creepy crawly creatures.
Science and Writing Cross-Curriculum
I do my Bugs unit in the Spring when the students are ready for a challenge – preparing a group report. To study bug characteristics, I divide the class into four groups. Each group is responsible for one kind of bug – bee, ant, butterfly or ladybug. I keep it simple – below you can see that I provide them with the facts (from my Bugs Math and Literacy unit).
Each student prepares an individual report on the bug and the fact they will be presenting. It is their responsibility to remember the fact and tell the class about it. Once the written portion is done, each group will have a chance to present their bug and give the facts.

We usually study the butterfly life cycle by observing live caterpillars as they eat, spin their cocoon and emerge as a butterfly. To reinforce what we have observed, the students complete this Butterfly Craftivity.
More Bugs & Insects Literacy Activities
My kiddos love mini-books. I could do one a week and they would never get tired of them. This mini-book always gets a laugh when my students read the ending. This mini-book comes with pocket chart cards for the entire book. During our Literacy work stations, I will have students reconstruct the book using the cards.
Here are two more Literacy activities that we do during our work stations:
A Word Family Sort…
And a Sentence Builder activity.
Since some of my literacy activities are time-consuming, I try to keep my math activities simple and direct.
Ladybug Subitizing from 1 to 20…
And Bug Measuring. In this picture, I am using non-standard units but you can change it to inches and centimeters!
